NGO Draft Resolution on the 5WCW (Eng, Fr, Sp)

[August 2012] After months of consultations, a number of women’s rights groups and other Non-governmental organizations have come to the following conclusions regarding the proposal to have a Fifth World Conference on Women or other commemoration of Beijing Plus 20:

1. A reaffirmation of commitment from Member States of the United Nations to the full implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action at its 20th year anniversary is critical. It is also paramount to galvanize political commitment to all other UN Resolutions and Agreements that seek to achieve gender equality, women’s equal participation in decision-making, implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security- particularly 1325 and 1820.

2. This reaffirmation of commitment must entail mobilizing strong political will and financial resources devoted to the former’s full implementation.

3. Events designed for this purpose should NOT entail an inter-governmental negotiation

4. The preferred modality for such an occasion is a High Level Meeting that is fully inclusive of civil society- particularly women’s organizations and other NGOs that work for gender equality and women’s empowerment, to be celebrated at the United Nations Seventieth Session of the General Assembly in 2015.
