[New York, 10 November 2010] Member States today took the next step in enabling the newly-created United Nations agency on gender equality and women’s empowerment to begin its work by electing countries to serve on its Executive Board.

[New York, 30 June 2010] The Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) Campaign celebrates the United Nations General Assembly resolution, agreed to on 30 June and to be formally adopted by the General Assembly on Friday, 2 July, to establish “UN Women”—the new gender equality entity at the UN. This move has been sought by women’s organizations and other civil society organizations around the world since the UN established a System-Wide Coherence Panel for UN Reform in 2006.

[New York, 26 May 2010] Member States met at an informal consultation yesterday to negotiate the part of the draft System-Wide Coherence resolution that is related to the new UN gender equality entity.

[New York, 10 May 2010] No agreement between Member States was achieved in the detailed discussion of the draft resolution on the new UN women’s agency that took place at the UN on 30 April and 3 May.

[New York, 23 April 2010] United Nations Member States met on 16 April in the first informal consultation to discuss the draft resolution for System-wide Coherence.

[New York, 13 April 2010] The facilitators of the UN System-wide Coherence process have put together the elements that could be included in the resolution that the General Assembly will have to pass in order to create the new UN women’s agency.

[New York, 12 April 2010] The GEAR Campaign has prepared a useful analysis about the content of Government statements at the 54th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) that took place in March this year.
