The founding document of the United Nations signed by every member country defines the UN mission as "to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women".

Current UN gender equality structure

The UN's current structure which deals with gender equality and women's empowerment is incredibly complicated. There are four small entities working exclusively on women's issues. Some of them work on policy, some on research, and some do operational work on the ground mainly in developing countries. All the four women's entities are under-resourced.

The UN cannot help countries achieve gender equality and women's empowerment if work on women's issues remains fragmented, uncoordinated and under-resourced.
