GEAR Campaign in Africa GEAR Campaign has two focal points in Africa. The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) is the regional focal point for Anglophone Africa. Servitas Cameroon is the regional focal point for the Francophone countries of South-Saharan Africa. The two focal points work closely together.
FEMNET
FEMNET was founded in 1988 as a pan-African, membership-based network, with a vision of African women’s collective leadership for equality, peace and sustainable development. As a pan-African organisation, FEMNET’s work is implemented in over thirty seven countries in Africa, through its membership and focal point organizations. The Secretariat is centrally located in Nairobi, Kenya. Within the framework of its vision and mission of promoting gender
equality and women’s empowerment, FEMNET continues to operate as a
regional network working as an interface between civil society
organizations (CSOs) working on women’s advancement and key stakeholders
such as governments, intergovernmental organizations like the United
Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU), and development agencies in
general. FEMNET is presently one of eight (8) African CSOs elected as
members of the ECOSOC General Assembly.
FEMNET coordinated the official launch of the GEAR Campaign in Africa in July 2008 in Nairobi, Kenya. Ten sub-regional focal points were identified at a strategy meeting and they have been on the ground implementing various advocacy and communication related activities with an aim to further popularise the Campaign and implement Campaign activities throughout Africa.
